I'm curious to know more about why she chose this place to begin with. There's probably a reason she's keeping all these apparently expendable lifeforms alive, and unless the Hornets are somehow wrong about her motives, it's clearly not out of the goodness of her heart. Maybe something about this environment in particular that fosters the ideal conditions for rare mutations other environments can't support--mutations such as Elyath with a Y chromosome?

And then there's that whole business about the Silver Gardens, too. Are the Elyath there just breeding stock that have the right combination of genes to maximize the possibility for male offspring?

I should probably hold off on speculating too much, though. I've been super wrong before.

Those are some solid theories! :o

BTW, despite looking like female humans, Elyath already produce male gametes naturally! But those are only compatible with certain groups of plants found in their home world. This was disclosed all the way back in chapter 8, though, which was literally years ago by now.

I wonder the same as Ethan.

And about the motives of the queen after she got what she wanted.

Hmmm...

Edit: Something felt strange about this, took me some time to get a grip on it:

The Queen got the ashes from Elyeo hunters. Which means that there were Elyeo hunters (who surely are not Elyeos) before the queen got to know about a male Elyeo - or did she know what she was looking for before she found the ashes? Anyway, assuming that the Elyeo hunters were humans, the Circle must have existed already before she got the ashes, so the queen didn't create it for her breeding program. This conclusion relies on the assumption that the Elyeo hunters were humans... but if they were not, what else were they? So far I only know that Elyeos can breathe outside of the Circle. (Somehow I suspect that there was another hint that escapes me right now.)

Anyway, if my idea is correct, the Hornets should have realized that the queen did not create the Circle to breed or find a male Elyath.

Hmmmm... also... if the queen could so easily pack up and go, why didn't she on the Elyath's home world? There is probably some more to this story...

Also (also), super beautiful last panel! :-)

The Queen could've known she needed/wanted a male Elyeo before the Father King existed! Like, on a theoretical level. And then the dragons finally found one...

Cosmic beings gonna do what cosmic beings gotta do, for whatever cosmic reasons that may or may not be comprehensible for the mortal mind. Though there is a rather conspicuous mystery that I'm surprised no one's asked yet... Why are Renchos being brought to Keol if they are useless for the Queen's breeding program? (which they are, because they can't reproduce at all in Keol, not even with their own kind)
