"He of a hundred vaguely impressive names."

Lushaka's ear mannerisms remind me of my cat's.

Impersonation, or relative? Hmm.

He doesn't know any relative of his to have that name, although that's not saying much because he doesn't know any of his family beyond his father + father's partner + littermates... (MAYBE one sibling or two not from the same litter, in addition to that. Maybe.)

He must be part of the Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme for teachers. ;)

Now wouldn't it be perfect if it were a tiger conservation organization, or a cat food/toy/litterbox brand? Alas!

I love Ethan's slightly-appalled reaction at Lushaka asking what's in it for them. That's a "really dude?!" expression if I ever saw one.

I like that he's super expressive, since he's the only character as of now to make expressions/ gestures that are familiar to Western readers. I was just reading this Korean comic earlier, and there was this one panel where a character had this very blank expression. I don't know if how well that would read to Western readers even with the context, but I (and all the other Korean readers in the comments section) instantly recognized that as "holy crap, I... feel really bad about what I just did."

Of course, not implying Koreans are better at reading expressions. It's just interesting how the same expression works differently depending on the culture.

Ooh, that's an interesting point. Even body language isn't totally universal. And now I know to take a closer look at the expressions and gestures of the other characters. Maybe I can learn a thing or two by observing your art.

Even super basic things like laughters, eye contact and nods are used differently! When I write in English, I have a tendency to slightly Westernize the characters' behavior if I don't watch myself.

Reminds me of how eye contact is distespectful in some places and lack of eye contact is in others. (I have to remind myself with my own comic that the two Americans smile way more than the rest of the cast.)
I love that you think through details like this -- really brings out a sense of place.

The eye contact thing is totally real and very significant. I think it's a bit over-simplifying to say it's "disrespectful" or "respectful," though (which is understandable, because how DO you describe a cultural thing without simplifying it at least a little? The complexity is mind-blowing, and any seemingly small facet of it can be the topic of a 100-page dissertation).

In cultures that I'm familiar with, eye contact means willingness to communicate. It's that willingness (not the eye contact itself) that can be respectful/welcome or disrespectful. Is willingness considered nice and friendly? Or is it too forward, like invading someone's personal space? Or is it forward and unwelcome in a different way? etc...

That's a very good point. Even in the (sub)culture I come from, where eye contact is often expected, you don't look somebody in the eye with zero pause unless you're about to fight or make out or something similarly intense. :p
