Looking forward to hearing more about just what happened between the humans and the Rencho, to create such tensions and horrible misunderstanding

Considering how xenophobic this culture is, it could easily be something ridiculously insignificant.

That said, "xenophobia" really doesn't have the right nuance for the deal with this society. It's a bit of that, plus some.... kinda-well-intentioned segregationism. There's an underlying belief that different groups of people are born differently, and that a salad bowl society isn't good for anyone.

Not that they strive for the melting pot. They're more like a bento box: different things sectioned off neatly, same things hanging out together. Not really because outsiders are icky or whatever -- they're a high-context culture, and maintaining that is only possible if the members are very... homogeneous.

Not sure if you can call him or his friends "good people," but this guy seems to have some redeeming qualities, at least!

Ethan's straightforward curiosity at hearing all this stuff is part of what makes him so likable in my opinion. He's surprised, but he's not scared, and even when he is, he tries to be rational about it. More than anything, he's trying to understand and figure things out. He doesn't treat things like a threat until they prove to be one. Case in point, the Squishy Human that most of us would be more willing to trust than the Rencho, if we were in his situation.

That being said, maybe the Squishy Human isn't trying to pull one over one them and really does need help. We'll see, I guess.

Time will tell what kind of an impact the rougher bumps on his journey will have on his thoughtful, yet naive, sense of fairness. So far it seems to have remained in tact after a hostile misunderstanding with a bunch of people + one murderous magic lady + a midnight robbery attempt, but the dangers that lie ahead may be even more... extreme.
